The rest of the college football world will take a backseat on Saturday afternoon when Army and Navy renew their historic rivalry at 3:00 p.m. ET. For the first time ever, the game will be played at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ. Here are BetPrep’s key trends for this weekend’s lone matchup.
Army (-7.5) vs. Navy
3:00 p.m. ET, Saturday (O/U: 34)
Army will vie for its fourth outright Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy in the last five seasons. Navy had won 14 straight games in this series between 2002 to 2015, but Army has since taken control of the rivalry with victories in four of the last five meetings. That includes last season’s 15-0 win over Navy, the first shutout in the series since the Midshipmen’s 34-0 rout in 2008.
What’s unique about Saturday’s matchup is that Army will retain possession of the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, even with a loss. That’s because the Black Knights defeated Air Force 21-14 on November 6, while the Falcons handed Navy a 23-3 defeat on September 11. Thus, even if the Midshipmen win on Saturday, the three service academies would each be 1-1 against each. Since Army won the trophy last season, it would retain possession of the trophy for another year.
If you like offense, then this game isn’t for you. The Under is 17-4 in the last 21 meetings between these two teams, which includes last year’s 15-0 win for Army. That marked the lowest-scoring game in the series since the teams played to a 3-3 tie in 1981. The two teams combined for only 279 total yards and a total of two completed passes.
From a spread standpoint, the Black Knights are 5-1-1 against the spread in the last seven meetings between these two teams.
