3 Things To Watch At Bears Training Camp

The Chicago Bears began training camp on Wednesday at Halas Hall. Here are three areas where the Bears will learn more about themselves over the course of camp:

Cornerback Battle

It’s Desmond Trufant versus Kindle Vildor for the Bears’ CB2 job. It would be a great sign for the Bears if Vildor, a 2020 fifth-round pick, were to take the job and run with it. Bears general manager Ryan Pace said that Vildor is one of the young guys on the team who comes to mind when he thinks of guys ready to take the next step.

“He’s such a pro, the way he prepares and the way he goes about his daily plan,” Pace said. “He’s a talented player, and we were really excited to get him in that area of the draft. The sky’s the limit for him.” Trufant has struggled with injuries recently, missing 17 games in the last two seasons. Pace praised Trufant’s “stickiness” and ability to stay with receivers in man coverage. Trufant’s experience probably gives him a slight edge over Vildor, but with Trufant’s injury history, that might not matter.

Quarterback Comparison

Andy Dalton is going to start Week 1 if healthy, whether Bears fans like it or not. Training camp is all about getting him ready for that game while also helping Justin Fields grow and eventually take over the reins. Dalton is a solid veteran who has been around the block a number of times. It’s a good measuring stick for Fields at this point in his development. As an added bonus for comparison, Nick Foles is still on the roster, so Chicago can compare Dalton and Fields to the quarterback play they got last season.

Offensive Line Depth

The Bears’ depth up front will be tested in training camp. Both of the projected starting tackles, Teven Jenkins and Germain Ifedi, are dealing with injuries at the moment. This creates opportunities for under-the-radar guys to step up and show the coaches what they can do. One guy to watch closely is rookie Larry Borom. Borom was supposed to challenge Ifedi for the job at right tackle. With Ifedi out, can Borom lock down the job?
