Can Anthony Miller Have Positive Impact On Texans Offense?

More isn’t always better, but in some cases, it’s exactly what’s needed.

Texans rookie quarterback Davis Mills will make his first career start on Thursday night when Houston takes on the 2-0 Carolina Panthers on primetime, and he’ll be doing so with a new weapon at his disposal.

Texans wide receiver Anthony Miller will be active for the first time in his Houston career, per Aaron Wilson.

It’s excellent news for the Texans and Mills, who need all the help they can get on the offensive side of the ball. Miller should see plenty of reps in a receiver room that is absolutely starved for NFL-worthy talent at the position. Prior to getting Miller back healthy, Houston has fielded the likes of NFL journeymen Chris Conley and 36-year-old Danny Amendola in three-receiver sets alongside Brandin Cooks.

Miller was traded to the Texans from Chicago in return for a 2022 fifth-round pick after failing to establish himself as an every-down player for the Bears. The former Memphis standout is still just 26 years of age and is walking into a new opportunity that is begging to be seized. Miller may have failed to live up to the expectations in Chicago, but he’s a chain-mover that should serve as an asset to Mills on Thursday night and beyond. For his career, 76 of Miller’s 134 receptions have resulted in first downs, good for a respectable conversion rate of 56.72%.

At Memphis, Miller totaled an astounding 3,738 yards from scrimmage while reaching the end zone an impressive 40 times in three years. Miller would then enhance his reputation at his Pro Day by posting a 39-inch vertical jump and a stunning 6.65 in the 3-cone. Miller has failed to turn all the pre-draft hype into tangible results on the NFL field so far, and his inconsistencies eventually led to him falling by the wayside on Chicago’s depth chart, and furthermore, out of favor with the Bears’ front office brass.

Miller won’t encounter the same kind of talent in Houston that he played alongside in Chicago, which could allow him to truly thrive for the first time in his professional career. Cooks is off to an excellent start in 2021, but with all due respect, isn't the elite playmaker that Allen Robinson is. The Texans certainly don't have a No. 2 receiver as talented as Darnell Mooney, either.

Miller is an exciting pass-catcher that could make an immediate impact in Houston, starting on Thursday night.
