2021 NFL Draft Props: Who’s Best Bet For No. 3 Pick?

The deeper we get into the 2021 NFL Draft, the Butterfly Effect comes into play more and more. It won’t take long for our journey to reach a fork in the road. After Trevor Lawrence is inevitably selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars as the No. 1 overall player in the class, there’s a lot on the table for the following pick. I break down the betting odds here, but it will more than likely be to Zach Wilson

There has been a little bit of a shakeup since this article first published—and by “little shakeup” I mean the San Francisco 49ers shocked the NFL world by moving up to No. 3 overall. Spoiler: They’re taking a quarterback. Who will be San Francisco’s QB of the future?

Let’s take a look at the odds for the third player selected in the 2021 NFL Draft, courtesy of BetOnline.

  • Mac Jones (-150)
  • Justin Fields (+110)
  • Trey Lance (+500)
  • Zach Wilson (+1600)

Mac Jones or Justin Fields

When the 49ers’ trade was first announced, many assumed that the move was to grab either Fields or Lance to replace Jimmy Garoppolo as the quarterback of the future. Then, there was a report that Kyle Shanahan and Co. were actually interested in Jones. Then another report. Then general manager John Lynch and Shanahan decided to attend Jones’ Pro Day instead of Fields’.

What’s a smokescreen, what’s due diligence, and what isn’t is too hard to decipher right now. But Jones is very much in play as an option and he’s the odds-on favorite at the moment. However, it’s interesting to note that Fields opened at +500 at BetOnline on the morning of April 8 only to quickly be moved down to +160 then a few hours later to +110. The current odds are more reflective of where the value should be given the information available to us at this time.

I encourage everyone to check out Benjamin Solak’s in-depth breakdown of who is the best fit for the 49ers here. For my money, I have a hard time believing Jones is the guy the 49ers traded all the way up to No. 3 for.

Trey Lance or Zach Wilson

Lance is the really intriguing name for me. Here’s what I wrote about him and San Francisco right after the trade was made:

With time to develop, Lance appears to be a solid fit for the 49ers’ offense—possibly a better fit than even Wilson. The NDSU offense ran plenty of similar concepts, and Lance’s ability to successfully execute play-action rollouts at a high level with proper technique will be a humongous plus for him in this offense. His excellent arm strength, mostly-consistent ball placement (some mechanical improvements are needed here for him to solidify this aspect of his game), and overall poise/leadership are just a few things 49ers fans can look forward to if Lance is selected.

I absolutely would not rule out Lance being the guy to take over mid-season for the 49ers in 2021.

If Wilson is there at No. 3, I can’t imagine the 49ers not pulling the trigger. It just doesn’t seem very likely and I’d need better than a 16/1 to risk it.

Best Bet(s): Fields (+110) or small bet on Lance (+500)
