Should Giants Start Jake Fromm For The Rest Of Season?

The New York Giants continue to crawl toward yet another lost campaign. Their latest embarrassment occurred on Sunday, as they were well beaten by their NFC East rival Dallas Cowboys to the tune of 21-6. It was relatively routine for the division-leading Cowboys, who allowed New York's offense to gain just 302 total yards of offense while forcing an astounding four turnovers. Starting quarterback Mike Glennon was beyond abysmal, completing 13-of-24 passing attempts for 99 yards and a staggering three interceptions.

The 32-year-old veteran journeyman has performed in a rather depressing manner since replacing Daniel Jones. In an extended four-game look, Glennon has completed just 53.5% of his passes while throwing three touchdowns and seven interceptions. Glennon was replaced by former Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm on Sunday, who immediately provided the Giants' offense with a much-needed upgrade.

Fromm certainly didn't light the world on fire, but he was serviceable, completing 6-of-12 passes for 82 yards. Fromm nearly surpassed Glennon's yardage total despite playing just the final three minutes of the fourth quarter and attempting 12 fewer passes than his incompetent counterpart. With Jones expected to miss the remainder of the season with a neck injury, the Giants should start Fromm the rest of the way.

There is plenty of blame to go around for New York's hapless season. Injuries have ravaged much of their starting offense, but it doesn't excuse Glennon for his lackluster showings, and there is absolutely nothing to gain by placing him back under center for their Week 16 divisional game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Glennon has started four games for the Giants in 2021. His performances have been beyond dreadful, and the Giants have lost all four of those contests by an average margin of 16.5 points. Glennon has failed to keep the Giants competitive despite being given ample opportunity to do so, and it's time to move forward with Fromm.

A sophomore fifth-round selection out of Georgia, Fromm began his professional career as a member of the Buffalo Bills' practice squad. A limited athlete and thrower of the football from an overall traits perspective, New York's front office brass would be foolish to get ahead of themselves and expect Fromm to develop into the long-term answer at quarterback they're so desperately seeking. Stranger things have happened, but it's certainly not the expected outcome. Fromm was more of a game-manager at Georgia, and expecting him to mature into more than that would be imprudent.

New York, unfortunately, has nothing to play for down the stretch and would be wise to utilize the remaining games on their schedule as an opportunity to further the progression and evaluate any and all young players they potentially identify as vital pieces of their future. Fromm factors into that equation as a potential high-upside backup signal-caller for 2022.
