Fantasy Football Week 8 Sneaky Starts

You survived bye-mageddon, as all the cool kids in the fantasy community are calling it. Now there are only two teams on bye this week, so setting your lineup should be a little bit easier. Still, you might need some help.

Let’s take a look at some players flying under the radar who are sneaky starts in Week 8 (please note, all players below are currently rostered in fewer than 25% of leagues):

Quarterbacks

Teddy Bridgewater (QB - DEN)

No team in the NFL allows more fantasy points per game to the quarterback position than Washington. Between that and the return of Jerry Jeudy, things are set up quite nicely for a QB1 outing for Bridgewater despite the Broncos’ losing streak. Washington is allowing quarterbacks to average more than 300 passing yards and 3.0 total touchdowns per game this season. Bridgewater has been a consistently inconsistent fantasy passer this year, but this should be a potential boom game for him.

OwnersBox Price: $6300

Jameis Winston (QB - NO)

The Jameis Winston revenge game! As the Saints have begun to throw more, the floor for Winston has risen. He hit the 30-attempt threshold in each of his last two games and should do so again on Sunday as he tries to keep pace with Tom Brady and the Buccaneers’ high-scoring offense. Tampa Bay has allowed the ninth-most fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season and are fielding an exploitable secondary. Plus, Winston is running some as well, getting at least 26 rushing yards in half of his starts this season.

OwnersBox Price: $6000

Deep Sleeper: Jimmy Garoppolo (QB - SF)

Running Backs

Boston Scott (RB - PHI)

With Miles Sanders presumably out for at least Week 8, both Kenneth Gainwell and Scott should assume bigger roles this week. Scott received plenty of early-down work once Sanders left the game last week and could be in line for a similar role this week against Detroit. What also plays in his favor is that the Eagles should have less “garbage time” than usual playing a team like the Lions. That means they can attempt to run the football more often instead of frantically throwing in the second half. The cherry on top of it all? Detroit is allowing the sixth-most fantasy points per game to running backs this season.

OwnersBox Price: $4400

Salvon Ahmed (RB - MIA)

Ahmed was seeing some more work in Miami’s backfield lately and now the RB2 role is clearly his with the injury to Malcolm Brown (who’s now on IR). Ahmed has been averaging 2.5 targets and 6.2 touches per game this season, but both of those numbers should go up this week. The Bills are a bad matchup, but Ahmed has proven to be a capable pass-catcher when called upon, so he shouldn’t be hindered too much by a negative game script for Miami.

OwnersBox Price: $4400

Samaje Perine (RB - CIN)

Perine is coming off back-to-back 14+ point games and could find himself getting a decent workload in the second half if/when the Bengals handle the Zach Wilson-less Jets like many expect—assuming Cincinnati wants to limit Joe Mixon’s touches some. With 27 touches over his last two games and a matchup against the No. 1 defense for fantasy running backs in front of him, Perine’s path to double-digit fantasy points isn’t too arduous.

OwnersBox Price: $4700

Deep Sleeper: Ty Johnson (RB - NYJ)

Wide Receivers

Russell Gage (WR - ATL)

After missing about a month of action, many forgot about Gage and his role as the WR2 for the Falcons. He caught five of his seven targets in Week 2 then caught four of six for 67 yards and a touchdown in his return to the field in Week 7. Calvin Ridley and Kyle Pitts will be Matt Ryan’s top pass-catching options, but don’t be surprised to see Atlanta lean more on Cordarrelle Patterson as a rusher now that Gage is back in the mix. The Panthers aren’t a great matchup, but I’m not running away from it, either.

OwnersBox Price: $4500

K.J. Osborn (WR - MIN)

The last time we saw Osborn on the field he was catching a walk-off overtime touchdown to defeat the Panthers, but he’s been making an impact as Minnesota’s WR3 all season long. Osborn is averaging more than four catches on nearly six targets per game and has a matchup against a Cowboys defense allowing the sixth-most fantasy points per game to wide receivers this season. With so much of the attention on Justin Jefferson and Adam Thielen, Osborn should have favorable matchups all day long.

OwnersBox Price: $4200

Kalif Raymond (WR - DET)

Volume matters and Raymond is getting plenty of it. He has 15 targets over his last two games and is averaging 6.6 per game in his last five. He’s averaging 9.84 FPPG (half-PPR) in that span, which includes the random 0 points he scored in Week 5. If you take that game out, he’s averaging 12.3 FPPG (half-PPR) in the other contests. The Lions are throwing a ton and Raymond appears to be the top non-D’Andre Swift target for Jared Goff.

OwnersBox Price: $4400

Deep Sleeper: Jamal Agnew (WR - JAX)

Tight Ends

C.J. Uzomah (TE - CIN)

The two tight ends on this list are the exact same as last week, and they’re both ranked as TE1s for Week 8. Uzomah caught two more touchdowns last Sunday, bringing his total to five in the last four games. While he’s fourth or fifth on the pass-catching pecking order, he’s making plenty of plays, finding the end zone, and has a strong matchup against the Jets this week. I have no issue putting him in my lineup this week if I’m replacing Mark Andrews or Darren Waller.

OwnersBox Price: $4700

Mo Alie-Cox (TE - IND)

Alie-Cox is tied with Noah Fant for the eighth-most fantasy points per game at the position over the last four weeks. In that span, he has four touchdowns and is averaging nearly four targets per game. Regardless of T.Y. Hilton’s health, Alie-Cox is a weekly touchdown threat for the Colts. You’re touchdown-hunting at the position unless you have a top option anyway, so why not put Alie-Cox in your lineup?

OwnersBox Price: $4100

Deep Sleeper: Blake Jarwin (TE - DAL)
