Will Cooper Kupp Break 2 NFL Receiving Records In 2021?

Sean McVay's Los Angeles Rams claimed an incredibly important victory over their division rival Arizona Cardinals on Monday Night. The Rams were without the services of several crucial offensive starters, such as running back Darrell Henderson, right tackle Rob Havenstein and tight end Tyler Higbee to name a few. It mattered little in the end, as the NFL's most dominant wide receiver was, well, the league's most dominant receiver on Monday. Cooper Kupp secured an astounding 13-of-15 targets for 123 receiving yards and a touchdown. It was Kupp's eighth 100-plus yard performance of 2021.

Kupp has already totaled career-highs in receptions (113), yards (1,489), and touchdowns (12), and leads the league in all three categories. Kupp is now just 36 receptions away from equaling Michael Thomas' all-time single-season receptions record (149), and 475 yards away from matching Calvin Johnson's single-season receiving yards (1,964) record. With four games remaining, Kupp will have to average north of nine receptions per contest to surpass Thomas' all-time record, and 119 yards per game to top Johnson's record.

Based on Kupp's current per-game averages of 8.69 receptions and 114.5 yards, he stands to fall just short of achieving either one. It's worth noting Kupp seems to be getting better as the year goes by. We actually love his chances of topping Thomas' and Johnson's all-time records.

Taking a peek at Los Angeles' remaining schedule reveals several opponents that currently rank in the bottom 10 of the passing yards allowed category. It sets Kupp up favorably to cement his 2021 campaign as an all-time great.

The Rams will host the Seattle Seahawks at SoFi Stadium in Week 15. The Seahawks own the league's 32nd-ranked passing defense in yards allowed by a healthy margin of 12 yards, currently allowing 278.9 passing yards per contest. Week 16 welcomes yet another bottom-10 secondary, as the Rams will travel to Minneapolis to square off with a Minnesota Vikings defense that's allowing 251.9 passing yards per contest (the eighth-worst mark in the NFL). It somehow keeps getting better. Kupp and the Rams will face the Baltimore Ravens in Week 17, who just lost star cornerback Marlon Humphrey for the season and are allowing 266.1 passing yards per game. That mark is only "bested" by Seattle's league-worst passing defense, which as mentioned, the Rams will happily face on Sunday. The regular season closes with an inner-divisional contest against a difficult San Francisco 49ers defense that is allowing just 213.2 passing yards per game.

To summarize, three of Kupp's final four opponents are among the worst secondaries in the NFL, with two of them actually being the worst.

Kupp's ascension from fairly solid complementary receiver to potential all-time record-breaker has been fascinating to monitor. Fans of the game should hold a genuine appreciation for what Kupp is currently achieving. It's not every year we get to witness true greatness in its purest form, and those are the heights Kupp is currently soaring for. Following Kupp's pursuit to shatter a pair of exciting all-time records as the regular season winds down is going to make for a captivating exercise.
