C.J. Uzomah Enjoying Breakout Season

The Cincinnati Bengals earned themselves a statement victory in Sunday’s shocking road win over their division rival Baltimore Ravens. The Bengals rounded off 28 consecutive points in the second half while promptly (and shockingly) moving into the No. 1 seed in the AFC. Ja’Marr Chase’s 200-yard performance rightfully captured headlines around the nation, but it was another budding superstar whose quiet emergence has taken the locker room by storm.

Seventh-year tight end C.J. Uzomah has revealed himself to be a mismatch in the passing game in recent weeks. Uzomah initially burst onto the scene with a monstrous Week 4 stat line in Cincinnati's win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The former fifth-round pick secured five-of-six targets for 95 receiving yards and two touchdowns but was rarely recognized nationally following his standout performance. It was quickly dismissed as a one-off performance from a veteran player that's hardly been a threat in years past. But just three games later, Uzomah turned in yet another eye-opening presentation by scoring two more touchdowns and totaling 91 receiving yards against the Ravens.

While Joe Burrow, Chase, Tee Higgins, Tyler Boyd, and Joe Mixon will continue to receive the bulk of the attention from opposing defenses, the chemistry between Burrow and Uzomah has been on full display.

“He’s found his spot,” Taylor said of Uzomah. “Joe [Burrow] has a lot of confidence in him, and he always makes plays when his number is called.”

The Auburn alum has hauled in 17 catches for 256 receiving yards and a career-high five touchdown receptions through just seven games, and will almost certainly surpass his best totals in catches (43) and yards (439) as well. Uzomah is thriving in an electric offense that is keeping defenses on their toes thanks to a cerebral quarterback that wins both pre and post-snap. Burrow is a young star at the quarterback position, and the Bengals have done a fantastic job providing him with a plethora of weapons at his disposal. Opposing secondaries are stretched thin as they sort through their best approach to combat the likes of Chase and Higgins, and Uzomah is routinely finding the soft zones in coverage to the tune of great success. Cincinnati's fearful passing offense, which is producing north of 262 passing yards per contest, is going to continue to thrive down the stretch, and Uzomah will continue to make the most of his opportunities.

Uzomah, who unfortunately tore his Achilles just two games into the 2020 campaign, has made a triumphant return to the field and is serving as a legitimate weapon for the first-place Bengals. Both Uzomah and the Bengals have served as revelations for one another in 2021, and both parties have what it takes to make even more magic together down the stretch.
