5 Players Who Raised 2021 NFL Draft Stock On Saturday

It was a statement weekend in college football. Georgia and Alabama proved they were worthy of the hype while Texas, Oklahoma, and Auburn showed they aren’t ready to run the table. While there were several outstanding prospect performances this weekend, these five caught my eye as they elevated their draft stock.

Mac Jones, QB, Alabama

Jones' first passing attempt of the game against Texas A&M on Saturday was a perfectly thrown deep ball, hitting wide receiver John Metchie III in stride for a 78-yard touchdown. For the game, he racked up a career-high 435 passing yards and four touchdowns while completing 20-of-27 passes. Jones was surgical in how he picked apart the Aggies defense, leading Alabama to 52 points while showcasing precision passing ability to all levels of the field. Jones isn’t viewed as a top-tier quarterback prospect, but he certainly has a baseline skill set to have a chance at the next level. Performances like the one he had Saturday certainly elevate his draft stock.

Tylan Wallace, WR, Oklahoma State

The Big 12 is three games into the season and Oklahoma State is the lone undefeated team in the conference, and Wallace is a big reason why. In the Cowboys’ 47-7 rout over Kansas, Wallace had nine catches for 148 yards and two touchdowns. While monster receiving production has become the norm for Wallace, he is coming back from a knee injury that he suffered late in the 2019 season that cost him the remainder of the year. Wallace has made some plays so far in 2020, but Saturday’s performance was far and away his most impressive outing. If Oklahoma State is going to stay atop the Big 12 and make noise in the College Football Playoff picture, Wallace staying healthy and continuing to be a dynamic playmaker will surely be critical.

Darius Stills, DT, West Virginia

Shootouts have become the norm when it comes to Big 12 football, but when West Virginia and Baylor hookup, points are suddenly at a premium. In 2019, Baylor edged the Mountaineers 17-14 and Saturday’s contest saw the two teams end regulation tied at 14. Defense was the catalyst for West Virginia’s overtime win and the effort was headlined by Darius Stills. In a dominant outing, Stills collected 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Stills is a touch undersized, but his ability to penetrate, get into the backfield, and disrupt makes him appealing at the next level. That is exactly what he was on Saturday.

Cary Angeline, TE, NC State

While Angeline isn’t going to challenge to be in the first tier of tight end prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft, he does have an appealing skill set that gives him a chance at the next level. In NC State’s 30-29 upset win over Pittsburgh on Saturday, Angeline showcased the best version of himself. Racking up 60 receiving yards and two touchdowns, Angeline was instrumental in the Wolfpack’s first win over a ranked opponent since 2017. Listed at 6-foot-7 and 250 pounds, Angeline has a massive catch radius and soft, reliable hands in addition to being a serviceable blocker. His blend of size and soft hands makes him an appealing option in the middle of the field and NC State took full advantage of that on Saturday.

Tyson Campbell, CB, Georgia

Campbell caught the eye of former NFL scout and current TDN Senior NFL Draft Analyst Drae Harris when studying the Georgia defense this summer with his appealing blend of size, fluidity, and physicality. Campbell’s first big test of the season came on Saturday against Auburn and he aced it. Challenged with terrific receivers in Seth Williams and Anthony Schwartz, Campbell limited their production as part of Georgia’s defense holding the Tigers to six points. For the game, Auburn had just 216 total yards and 15 first downs. Campbell played like a true shutdown corner in coverage and was enthusiastic in his efforts as a tackler and in run support. If he continues to play at this level, Campbell has first-round upside.
